AFTER TWO ATTEMPTS TO POST THIS , IT WAS QUICKER TO DO IT THIS WAY !!!! ( " HOW TO MAKE A BIRCH " )
The best way to make a birch is to cut 10 12 rods of almost equal length , place them even at the stem and tape them together at the stem for 6 inches to form a good handle , then trim the uneven tops until almost even , this the way aunt did it in England while I stayed with one summer , I was 18 and got the birch almost every evening , if you need more help just e-mail , i'm in nyc , joe
birching Go out, and find a birch tree. Cut down some branches (make sure the park ranger doesn't see you) these should be about as thick as your little finger at the thickest end, and around 3 to 4 feet in length. You will probably need around 6 of these branches. Run them through your fingers and remove the leaves. Take a strong piece of twine and tie the thickest parts together to make a handle around 6 - 8 inches long (or whatever feels comfortable to hold. Fill a bath with water and soak the birch for a few hours. Use with caution - it stings a *lot*. Done gently it feels really nice, but it doesn't take a lot of effort on the part of the wielder to cause a lot of pain. When you're done, stand it in a bucket of water, and it'll keep for weeks - soak for a few hours when you want to use it next. The fresher they are, the better the sensation. Oh yes - and the older they are, the more they shed - so if you're playing before bedtime, don't play on the bed, otherwise you'll just have to vacuum before you can get to sleep. --domino <domino@cocoon.demon.co.uk> ( from our friend Louiza )
The classic birch is 16 to 20 inches long , made from 20 to 30 birch twigs which are soaked overnight and tied with a ribbon .
